Rise of the Gargoyles
Year of Release: 2009
Director: Bill Corcoran

What it’s about: Set in Paris, two demolition men accidentally awake an ancient gargoyle from under an old church. With mysterious deaths occurring all over the city, it’s up to an architectural historian and a news crew to stop the winged creature before its eggs hatch. Dun, Dun, Dunnn (That’s some dramatic music for you there).

The Verdict: Rise of the Gargoyles attempts a few scares, so I’d say it attempts to be a horror movie. While some people might get a small fright or two from the multiple times characters get frightened by a stone gargoyle they didn’t realise was there, but apart from that this thing doesn’t make many other attempts at scaring us viewers – unless of course the gargoyle is meant to be scary, which of course it isn’t, it looks kinda fake ya know? Probably because it is a cheaply made CGI creature. The low budget is quite evident not only in the visual effects, but in the whole thing in general, it’s all shot on video so the production values don’t exactly look ground breaking. Despite this it’s quite an interesting B-movie premise; I mean who doesn’t want to see a gargoyle set loose on a city? Unfortunately the premise turns out to be a bit more interesting than the movie itself. What was interesting though is that fairly early on, a character’s torch flickers on and off whilst exploring under the church – only it doesn’t really flicker, instead it just turns on and off quite slowly...leading me to believe the actor is simply clicking it on and off to create the effect. On the topic of actors, what can I say about the acting? Well this is a made for TV movie so I can safely say it’s not very good – but at least it’s not massively horrible.

Overall it’s entertaining enough to pass the time; it’s just not a great way to pass the time.

Three Craptastic Stars(3 Craptastic Stars)

Golden Craptastic moment: Definitely the best moment in the movie is when the gargoyle kills a character on a roof top. What sets out to be a terrifying, unexpected moment when a character is swiftly beheaded – turns out hilarious! It’s extremely fake looking and rather pathetic all in one – that is to say that I loved it!
