Leprechaun
Year of Release: 1993
Director: Mark Jones

What it’s About: Ten years after a man traps a Leprechaun in his basement and steals its gold, a father and daughter move in. Along the way the Leprechaun is accidentally released. Now he won’t let anyone get in his way to get his gold back (yes, the Leprechaun is on a killing spree)

The Verdict: Attempting to make a leprechaun a scary slasher villain was probably a bad idea. The scary part is a complete failure. He’s so tiny and funny looking, this thing never had a chance. What makes it worse though is the filmmakers’ insistence that the little leprechaun should get around in little children’s toys, such as the little guy peddling as fast as his little legs will take him on a tricycle, his use of a children’s toy car to get around on the roads, or even his use of a pogo stick to bounce on a victim to death! For a film named Leprechaun you could be forgiven for thinking that it may be a bit more Irish, like maybe have it set in Ireland. It’s set in America...the guy somehow brought the little green guy over from Ireland, but even then I’m not sure if the leprechaun ever really lived in Ireland because he has no trace of an Irish accent – none at all. Also not helping is that the ultimate weapon against our super scary little villain is a four leaf clover...yeah...just hold one up and he freaks out. Not as good as a four leaf clover, but still quite good is the old shotgun – this thing is amazing – it never needs to be reloaded! I don’t get why everyone insists on using guns with limited bullets! Seriously, get one of these and no matter how much you shoot it, it never runs out...ever! Amongst the good guys the film features an early performance from Jennifer Aniston (she mustn’t have had many work offers back then). Clearly not having mastered the whole acting thing at this point in time she turns in a kind of crappy performance – but in saying this, it’s not as though she really had much to work with. For example, the leprechaun rubs her leg from under a truck; upon realising it wasn’t her new love interest she says “I know what it feels like when a man caresses my leg!” – Great writing...that was a bit of sarcasm for you.

On the whole it’s an interesting watch. Plenty of unintentionally funny moments to keep this film afloat, unfortunately at times the plot isn’t interesting enough to do the same.

Three and a Half Craptastic Stars(3 and a 1/2 Craptastic Stars)

Golden Craptastic Moment: In the climactic moments of the battle between humans and leprechaun, the group of humans realise they can’t get to their vehicle without being attacked by the wee guy – what can they possibly do? How can they ever distract him long enough for one of them to escape? Bring along a box of shoes and throw them to him to shine of course! Yes that’s right – this leprechaun is an obsessive shoe shiner, in fact in an earlier scene he breaks into the house just to shine their shoes while they are away...evil little bugger.
