Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000
Year of Release: 2000
Director: Roger Christian

What it’s About: It’s the year 3000 (No way!) and an evil race of aliens named the Psychlos run the earth, leaving the last surviving humans in a very primitive state. Eventually (yeah it takes a while) a small group of humans rebel against the evil super genius aliens in an attempt to gain freedom.

The Verdict: I can imagine the people making this film sitting around a table discussing how to make this post apocalyptic tale seem more post apocalyptic. “I’m just not sure if shots of broken down cities is enough!” says someone, “What if we tint everything blue and purple!?! That ought to do it...right?” another guy chimes in, “I think that’s a start...what if we Dutch tilt every single shot in the whole entire damn movie? “ suggests the third guy – his suggestion is met with a large round of applause and a lot of back slapping. Yes, the whole movie is shot with the camera leaning off to the side – usually when filmmakers use Dutch tilts they usually have motivation for it...and they tend to use it sparingly – both these factors are nowhere to be seen in this film. If all this isn’t enough Battlefield Earth features a large quantity of cheap looking wipes from the middle of the screen (clearly an attempt for a Star Wars type feel). I can also imagine these guys in post production thinking “What can we do here? Oh, I know let’s throw in another wipe, the audience loves that sort of stuff and we haven’t used them nearly enough!” As if all this isn’t stupid enough, in order to breathe characters often wear nose clips – I find this worth noting as they look ridiculous.

This film is full of stupid dialogue (“Man-animals” – seriously...what the hell!), weird cinematography and a painfully predictable plot. The whole thing feels a lot longer than it actually is – not a good sign. In saying this it gets an alright craptastic star rating due to it actually being entertaining at times (I don’t know how) and when it’s not intentionally entertaining (this is often...very often) the overall stupidity of everything about it will easily keep you entertained.

Three and a Half Craptastic Stars(3 and a 1/2 Craptastic Stars)

Golden Craptastic Moment: I have two little bits for this film. Firstly John Travolta – his whole performance is craptastic – his stupidly evil laugh, his stupid looking costume (complete with a big head...actually, that might just be fitting), his pathetic voice considering he is meant to be evil, and the fact that for an evil genius, he is very dumb – it’s all quite craptastic. I also find the scene where Jonnie Goodboy Tyler (what kind of sucky ass name is that?) gets a chance to read an old human book...the music builds up and becomes incredibly epic...wow...what a grand moment.
